BACK TO SCHOOL: A SEASON OF NEW BEGINNINGS
As a former teacher, this has always been my favorite time of year.
There is something special about the start of a new school year. Fresh notebooks. New pencils. New classrooms. New teachers. New friendships. New possibilities. Whether you’re a student, parent, educator, or community member, back-to-school season brings a sense of excitement and hope. It reminds us that every year gives us the opportunity for a fresh start and a chance to grow.
For students, the new school year opens doors to new experiences, new skills, and new dreams. For families, it represents a chance to establish routines, set goals, and support children as they learn and thrive. For our communities, it is a reminder that investing in education is one of the most important things we can do to create a stronger future.
At United Way of Southeastern Idaho, we believe that learning is one of the foundations of strong communities. When children have opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed, everyone benefits. Today’s students become tomorrow’s workforce, community leaders, entrepreneurs, and innovators.
But learning doesn’t stop when we leave the classroom.
One of the initiatives that beautifully reflects this belief is Read Talk Play, which began in American Falls. The idea is wonderfully simple: reading, talking, and playing with children are powerful ways to build the language, social, and cognitive skills they need to succeed in school and in life. These everyday interactions help create a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
The truth is, the Read Talk Play message isn’t just for young children. It’s also a reminder for all of us.
As adults and professionals, we need to continue reading, talking, and playing too.
Reading helps us expand our knowledge, challenge our thinking, and discover new ideas. Talking allows us to learn from one another, share experiences, collaborate, and build meaningful relationships. Playing, whether through creativity, exploration, hobbies, or trying something new, sparks innovation and helps us see possibilities we may have otherwise missed.
Some of our best ideas come not when we’re sitting at a desk, but when we’re curious enough to explore, experiment, and engage with the world around us.
In a rapidly changing world, lifelong learning has never been more important. The skills we need tomorrow may be different from the skills we use today. Communities that embrace learning, innovation, and growth are better positioned to solve challenges, support families, and create opportunities for everyone.
As the school year begins, I encourage all of us to embrace the spirit of the season. Pick up a new book. Have meaningful conversations. Try something you’ve never done before. Learn a new skill. Ask questions. Stay curious.
Back-to-school season is more than a date on the calendar. It’s a reminder that growth is always possible and that learning is a lifelong journey.
So here’s to fresh starts, fresh ideas, and fresh opportunities.
Let’s all continue to Read Talk and Play Everyday!
